Children’s Day for Preschoolers: 15 Activities, a Simple Speech and Why We Celebrate on 14 November

Children’s Day is the one day of the year when grown-ups make a fuss of children simply for being children. No exams, no homework, just play, treats and a lot of fancy dress.

This guide has 15 Children’s Day activities for preschool and home, a short Children’s Day speech for kids, 10 easy lines, and a simple answer to why Children’s Day is celebrated on 14 November.

Children’s Day 2026: Saturday 14 November 2026. Many preschools will celebrate on Friday 13 November instead. [CONFIRM: Shanti Juniors celebration date]. It’s also Labh Pancham in Gujarat (see Gujarati Diwali for kids).

Why is Children’s Day celebrated on 14 November?

14 November is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, born in 1889. He loved children, and children affectionately called him “Chacha Nehru” (Uncle Nehru). He believed children are the future of the country and deserve love, care and a good education.

After his death in 1964, India decided to celebrate his birthday as Children’s Day (Bal Diwas). Before that, India marked Children’s Day on 20 November, which is still celebrated around the world as the UN’s World Children’s Day.

For a 3-year-old: “Children’s Day is a special day for all children. A long time ago, a kind man called Chacha Nehru loved children very much. His birthday is today, so we celebrate children!”

Fun fact for older preschoolers: Chacha Nehru often wore a red rose on his coat. That’s why roses are a Children’s Day symbol.

15 Children’s Day activities for preschool and home

At preschool or in a group

  1.         Fancy dress parade: freedom fighters, community helpers, animals, fruits, or “what I want to be.” Keep costumes simple and comfortable.
  2.         Teachers perform for children: a song, a skit or a puppet show. Children love seeing adults be silly.
  3.         Talent show: a rhyme, a dance or simply saying their name on stage. Clapping for everyone is the rule. A few rhyme ideas are in our nursery rhymes for kids post.
  4.         Games corner: musical chairs (with no one “out”, just fewer chairs and more laps), passing the parcel, sack race with pillowcases, balloon tap.
  5.         Paper rose craft: red paper petals glued to a green straw, to remember Chacha Nehru’s rose.
  6.         “My favourite things” circle time: each child shares a favourite toy, food or colour.
  7.         Picnic in the play area with a shared fruit platter.
  8.         Kindness tree: a paper tree on the wall where children add a leaf with something kind they did.

At home

  1.         Child’s choice day: your child chooses breakfast, the park, and the bedtime story (within reason).
  2.     Treasure hunt: picture clues for little ones (“look under the thing we sleep on”), with a small prize at the end.
  3.     Family yoga: a few animal poses together, from our yoga for kids routine.
  4.     Pretend play day: set up a shop, clinic or restaurant and let your child be the boss. Pretend play builds real skills (see benefits of pretend play).
  5.     Photo memory book: look at baby photos together and talk about how much they’ve grown.
  6.     Donation box: your child picks one toy or book they’ve outgrown to give to another child.
  7.     Feelings check-in: “What made you happiest today?” Building the words for feelings is a gift in itself; see naming feelings in 2–5 year olds.

Tip: don’t plan all fifteen. Two or three, done with full attention, mean more.

A simple Children’s Day speech for kids

30-second version (Nursery, Junior KG):
> “Good morning, everyone. My name is ___. Today is Children’s Day. We celebrate it on 14 November, the birthday of Chacha Nehru. He loved children very much. Happy Children’s Day to all my friends! Thank you.”

1-minute version (Senior KG):
> “Good morning to my teachers and friends. My name is ___. Today is Children’s Day. We celebrate it every year on 14 November, the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister. Children called him Chacha Nehru because he loved them so much. He always wore a red rose on his coat. He believed that children are the future of India. On Children’s Day, we play, we share and we have fun. Thank you to all our teachers for taking care of us. Happy Children’s Day!”

Speech tips for little ones: practise in front of the family a few times, let them hold a paper rose, and praise effort, not perfection. If they freeze on stage, a wave and “Happy Children’s Day!” is a perfectly good speech.
