What Age Should a Child Start Preschool? A Complete 2026 Guide for Indian Parents

Most children in India start preschool between 2 and 3 years of age. Playgroup usually begins around 2, nursery around 3, and the kindergarten years, junior KG and senior KG, follow at about 4 and 5, before formal school at 6. There is no single correct age for every child, and readiness matters more than the exact birthday.

This aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020, which places early childhood care and education from age 3 within the foundational stage. The policy notes that children aged 3 to 6 were not covered by the earlier 10+2 school structure, and the new 5+3+3+4 structure adds a strong base of early childhood education from age 3. Global bodies add a key caveat. The National Association for the Education of Young Children, NAEYC, holds that developmental readiness, such as managing emotions at drop-off and following simple instructions, is a better guide than age alone. This guide covers the age stages, readiness signs, whether to start early or late, the documents you need, and how to settle your child in.

What is the right age to start preschool in India?

The common starting age is 2 to 3 years, with playgroup at around 2 and nursery at around 3.

Most preschools accept children from around 2 years for playgroup, moving to nursery at 3, junior KG at about 4, and senior KG at about 5. Formal schooling typically begins at 6. NEP 2020 defines a foundational stage covering ages 3 to 8, made up of three years of early childhood education followed by the first two years of primary school, with a focus on play-based learning. These ages are typical, not fixed by law, and a difference of a few months either way is normal.

What are the preschool age stages, toddcare to senior KG?

Preschool runs across four stages, toddcare, nursery, junior KG and senior KG, from about 2 to 5 years.

Each stage has a rough age band and a focus. Ages can shift slightly by school and by the child.

Stage Typical age Main focus
Toddcare 2 to 3 years Settling in, free play, first social skills
Nursery 3 to 4 years Language, early motor skills, group routines
Junior KG (LKG) 4 to 5 years Pre-reading, pre-writing, early numbers, confidence
Senior KG (UKG) 5 to 6 years School readiness, structured learning, independence

How do I know if my child is ready for preschool?

A child is usually ready when they can separate from a parent for a short time, communicate basic needs, and show interest in other children.

Readiness is about behaviour, not just age. NAEYC states that developmental readiness, such as managing emotions during drop-off and following simple instructions, is far more telling than age alone. Two children of the same age can be ready at very different times, and that is normal.

Signs your child may be ready

  • They can stay calm for a short while without a parent beside them.
  • They can tell an adult when they need something, with words or gestures.
  • They show curiosity about other children and new activities.
  • They can sit through a short story, song or activity.

Signs your child may need a little more time

  • They cannot yet communicate basic needs in any form.

If several not-ready signs stand out, there is no harm in waiting a few months. A half-day or slow-start option can bridge the gap for a child who is close but not fully settled.

Is it better to start preschool early or late?

Neither is automatically better. Starting within the 2 to 3 year band suits most children, but readiness should guide the exact timing.

Starting earlier, around 2 Starting later, around 3 to 4
Builds social confidence sooner Gives a younger child more time to settle
Establishes daily routine early Suits children born close to a cut-off date
More time to adjust before school Often more verbal and independent at entry

Since NAEYC frames emotional readiness as more telling than the birthday, a child ready at 2 can start, and a child who needs until 3 is equally fine. There is no strong evidence a few months makes a lasting academic difference.

What documents are needed for preschool admission in India?

You usually need the child’s birth certificate, passport-size photos, parent ID and address proof, and a vaccination record.

  • Child’s birth certificate, used to verify age.
  • Passport-size photographs of the child.
  • Parent identity proof, commonly Aadhaar.
  • Address proof, such as a utility bill or rent agreement.
  • Vaccination or immunization record.

Some schools ask for a little more, like a medical note or a transfer certificate. Confirm the exact list, and keep both originals and self-attested photocopies ready.

How can I help my child settle into preschool?

Prepare gently before the first day, keep goodbyes short and calm, and stay consistent through the first few weeks.

  1. Talk about school positively in the days before, as a fun place to meet friends.
  2. Keep the morningcalm, and let the child carry their own small bag.
  3. Keep goodbyes short and warm. A long, worried goodbye makes separation harder.
  4. Be consistent with drop and collect times to build trust and routine.

Some tears in the first days are normal. Most children settle within a few weeks once the routine feels safe and predictable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for preschool in India?

Most preschools accept children from around 2 years for playgroup. Formal early childhood education under NEP 2020 is framed from age 3.

Can a child start preschool at 4 years?

Yes. A child starting at 4 usually joins junior KG rather than playgroup. This is perfectly normal.

Is 2 years too early for preschool?

Not necessarily. If the child can manage a short time away from a parent and shows interest in other children, 2 years is a reasonable start.

Is preschool compulsory in India?

No. Preschool is not legally compulsory, but NEP 2020 encourages universal early childhood education from age 3.

How many hours is a preschool day?

Most preschools run a half-day, often two to four hours. Some offer full-day or daycare hours for working parents.

My child was born just after the cut-off date, what should I do?

Speak to the preschool about their cut-off and let readiness guide you. Many children who start slightly later settle in very well.
